Your Gut Has a Brain — And It's Running the Show More Than You Think

You feel butterflies before a difficult conversation. Your stomach clenches when you're under pressure. You lose your appetite when something goes wrong, or you reach for comfort food when you're low. These aren't quirks of personality. They are the gut-brain axis at work — a two-way communication system so deeply wired into your biology that researchers now call the gut your "second brain."
This is the founding idea behind what I do at LuxembourgPsychology, and it's why I built The Food Lab. Not because food is a cure, but because what you eat, when you eat, and how you eat shapes the biological conditions in which your mind operates every single day.
What the Gut-Brain Axis Actually Is
Buried in the lining of your digestive tract is an independent network of roughly 100 to 500 million neurons — the enteric nervous system. It communicates constantly with your brain, primarily through the vagus nerve, a long, wandering nerve that runs from your brainstem all the way down to your colon. This connection carries signals in both directions: the brain sends instructions to the gut, and the gut sends signals back up to the brain.
About 90% of those signals travel upward — from gut to brain. That ratio alone should shift how we think about mental well-being.
Your gut microbiome, the trillions of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms living in your digestive tract, plays a central role in this system. These microorganisms are not passive passengers. They produce neurotransmitters, including serotonin, GABA, and dopamine precursors, that directly influence mood, stress response, and anxiety. Approximately 90 to 95% of your body's serotonin is synthesized in the gut, not the brain.
This means the biological environment in your digestive system is, in a very real sense, part of the landscape of your mental health.
Why This Matters for Mood, Stress, and Anxiety
Chronic stress alters gut permeability, disrupts the microbial balance, and reduces the diversity of bacteria that produce calming neurotransmitters. Poor diet, irregular eating, and disrupted sleep have similar effects. The result is a feedback loop: psychological stress affects the gut, and an imbalanced gut amplifies the stress response.
Research published in journals including Nature Microbiology and Gut has linked lower gut microbial diversity to higher rates of depression and anxiety. Studies on the microbiome-gut-brain axis show that certain bacterial strains influence the body's cortisol response — our primary stress hormone. When those strains are reduced, the nervous system stays in a more reactive state.
This is not a fringe idea. It is one of the fastest-growing areas of clinical neuroscience, and it sits at the center of what I apply in counseling sessions and in The Food Lab.
Three Things You Can Start Doing This Week
Understanding the gut-brain axis is useful. Applying it is better. Here are three practical shifts backed by research and grounded in what I see work with real people.
1. Feed your microbiome, not just your appetite.
Gut microbial diversity is largely shaped by dietary variety, particularly fiber from plants. Aim for 30 different plant-based foods per week — vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds. You don't need large quantities of each; variety is the key variable. Fermented foods like plain yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and sauerkraut introduce beneficial bacterial strains that support neurotransmitter production.
2. Pay attention to how you eat, not just what.
Eating while stressed activates the sympathetic nervous system, which diverts blood away from the digestive tract and impairs gut function. The parasympathetic nervous system — the one that allows proper digestion and signals satiety — needs a calm state to work well. Slowing down, sitting, and taking a few breaths before a meal is not a wellness cliché. It is physiology. Even five minutes of reduced stress before eating makes a measurable difference to how your gut processes food and relays signals upward to the brain.
3. Protect your sleep to protect your microbiome.
The gut microbiome follows a circadian rhythm. Disrupted sleep, shift work, and irregular meal timing all reduce microbial diversity and impair the gut's ability to regulate inflammation and produce mood-stabilizing compounds. Consistent sleep timing, even on weekends, is one of the most underestimated tools for gut-brain health.
The Biopsychosocial Picture
