Welcome, dear readers, to a blog post that will take you on a journey through the mesmerizing world of narcissism. Brace yourself as we explore the different types of narcissists that roam our communities, from the garden-variety grandiose narcissist to the mysterious covert narcissist and the charitable yet self-absorbed communal narcissist.
I live in Luxembourg so the following examples of the types of narcissistis are completely made up people. I simply use some archetypes to illustrate narcissistic behavior you might recognize.
This is a land of banks, fancy cars, high incomes, fortune, and with all that comes a lot of self-obsession. Here, like in all wealthy places you're likely to encounter a narcissist. But not all are created equal. Let's have a look at some of the types identified in psychological research.

The Grandiose Narcissist - Classic Chanel of Narcissism
First up, the garden-variety grandiose narcissist, the one who thinks the world revolves around them. They are the ones who love the spotlight, seek validation and attention, and are always boasting about their achievements. "Look at me! Don't I have the most beautiful house?"

You might recognise Mr X, the quintessential Grandiose Narcissist, and the talk of the city's high society. With his dashing looks, impeccable style, and unwavering confidence, Mr X believes the world truly revolves around him. As the heir to a renowned family fortune, he basks in the spotlight at every social event, seeking validation and attention from all who surround him. You can always find him boasting about his latest achievements, whether it's his extravagant mansion overlooking the city or his exclusive luxury car collection. Mr X's charm may captivate many, but beneath the surface lies an insatiable thirst for admiration and an unyielding desire for praise.
The Malignant Narcissist - The Villain of Narcissism
Oh, beware of the malignant narcissist! They possess all the traits of the grandiose narcissist, but with a twist. They're not just egoistic; they can be downright mean and dangerous. They'll cheat, lie, and even steal their way to the top. These are the Bernie Madoff types who wreak havoc on others' lives.

Beyond his grandiose exterior, he resorts to deceit and manipulation, cheating and stealing to achieve his ambitions. His actions leave a trail of financial ruin and shattered dreams among his victims. Mr Y's Machiavellian tactics involve fraudulent practices, cheating investors, and even stealing from his clients' accounts to fund his lavish lifestyle. Trust is paramount in finance, so stay vigilant against those who exploit power for destructive ends. Not all that glitters is gold.
The Covert Narcissist - The Victims of their Own Greatness
This one is sneaky! The covert narcissist appears all vulnerable and victimized, but beneath the surface, they are still full of grandiosity. They may seem passive-aggressive and often blame the world for their lack of recognition. "I could have been one of the great writers, but the world didn't notice my greatness!"

You met him, maybe as an ex? At first he is the charming boyfriend with a covert narcissistic side peeking later in the relationship. He plays the victim and blames the world for not recognizing his greatness. Beneath his vulnerable facade lies a deep-seated grandiosity. His covert manipulation and need for constant validation can take a toll on your emotional well-being. Recognizing the signs of a covert narcissist will empower you to navigate relationships with more clarity and understanding.
The Communal Narcissist - The Humanitarian with an Agenda
The communal narcissist is the philanthropist who loves to flaunt their good deeds. They'll feed the homeless, save puppies, and donate money, but it's all about getting recognition. They crave constant validation for their noble acts and expect the world to acknowledge their greatness.

Meet Ms S, the girlfriend type material who embodies the hidden traits of a communal narcissist. With a heart of gold and a passion for philanthropy, she seems like the perfect partner with her selfless acts of feeding the homeless, rescuing puppies, and generously donating money to various causes. However, beneath her charitable exterior lies a strong desire for constant recognition.
Ms S craves validation and adoration for her noble deeds, and she makes sure the world knows about her charitable endeavors. From social media posts flaunting her good deeds to sharing her volunteer experiences with friends and family, she expects acknowledgment for her greatness.
Detecting Narcissists - A Handy Guide
While we may not be trained psychologists, there are some red flags to spot potential narcissists around us. Keep an eye out for those who incessantly play the victim, lack empathy, or constantly seek validation for their actions.
Statistics have often shown that narcissism is more prevalent in men than women. However, in the new world order, women are catching up in this game. Thanks to socialization, men have historically been encouraged to embrace ego and success, while women have been taught to suppress their emotions.
While some may see narcissism as a shortcut to success in our consumerist society, it comes with a heavy toll on mental health. The constant need for validation, lack of genuine connections, and the emptiness within can leave narcissists feeling lonely and unsatisfied.
